A Day in the Life of a Splash Café Dessert Baker

Baking is both an art and a science. It requires an eye for beauty, as well as a detailed understanding of how ingredients interact with each other. The dessert bakers at Splash Café combine the forces of beauty and brains every day to bake up a storm and shake things up for our customers!

We may be famous for our award-winning Clam Chowder, but Splash Café’s full-service bakery in San Luis Obispo is a flavor-packed powerhouse offering a wide range of delicious creations from cupcakes and cookies to dessert bars, special occasion cakes, and more.

Checking and filling the bakery cases

The first place people look when they walk into a bakery is the display case. The array of sugary treasures for sale is sure to stir up conversation about ingredients, flavors, and decorations between our staff and our customers. Our team makes sure that our cases are stocked daily with an assortment of fresh baked goods. Keep an eye out for our tried-and-true favorites along with plenty of specialty items like our festive cupcakes and cakes. Don’t see what you’re looking for? Brainstorming beautiful decorations

One of the best parts of working in our bakery is coming up with ideas for decorations! Splash Café bakers are tasked with scouring the internet for new trends and eye-catching designs. From cookies to baby bundt and bite-size cheesecakes, we’re always looking for ways to step up our game. We keep our ideas organized on Pinterest boards to serve as aesthetic inspiration for our team members.

Getting ahead for holidays 

Picture-perfect desserts are an important part of most holidays, from Mother’s Day to Halloween, so we’re constantly striving to get ahead. On top of their daily duties, our bakers are busy ordering and organizing inventory for upcoming holidays, reviewing custom orders, and planning out the schedule for baking and decorating.

Decorating and delivering wedding cakes 

Decorating at Splash Café is about more than just the cherry on top. We pride ourselves on designing edible artwork, especially for your special day. All of our wedding cake designs incorporate the freshest ingredients like locally grown berries and hand-whipped buttercream. Add a little flare with gold filigree or go for the gusto with multiple tiers and endless embellishments.

We want your big day to be as stress-free as possible, so bakers will deliver cakes Tuesday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. If you have questions on design or dietary needs, including gluten-free options, please contact our bakery manager at Bakery@SplashCafe.com.

Coming up with creative new flavors!

As mentioned previously, baking is both an art and a science—and the same goes for developing uniquely delicious flavors! Our bakers love to experiment with all kinds of ingredients to find recipes that totally pop. Stay tuned for some exciting new flavors, including strawberry lemonade, cotton candy, and maple bacon.

Fun and tasty things to do with leftover cake

Too stuffed to finish your Splash Café cake? Don’t let it go to waste! Save that sweet, spongey goodness to make fruit trifles, cake pops, cake truffles, and/ or cake popsicles. Here are some tips:

  • Cake pops: Put the leftover cake in the food processor, buttercream and all, then roll them into balls with your hands and dip them into tempered chocolate. 
  • Truffles: Do the same as above for the cake truffles, just leave out the sticks.
  • Cake popsicles: For this cool confection, pack the cake into custom molds, dip in chocolate, and let them chill in the freezer before serving.
  • Cake trifles: This is a quick and easy way to jazz up your leftover dessert. Fill individual cups or a large trifle bowl with leftover cake. Then, top it all off with layers of fruit and whipped cream. Pro tip: Use a clear platter or cups so people can see the different colors and textures!
  • Last, but certainly not least, make sure to decorate all of these creations with your favorite sprinkles and/or icing to make them unique for any special occasion!
