If you didn’t already know, we really love making Clam Chowder at Splash Café. Like, really, really love it. But you know what we love even more? Giving back to our community! National Clam Chowder Day is coming up on Feb. 25, so it seemed like the perfect time to bring our two greatest passions together. What can we say? Cupid inspired us!
On Feb. 25 and 26, we’re donating 10% of our in-store proceeds to The Martha Olson-Fernandez Foundation (MOFF) to help fight ALS. So stop in at our Pismo Beach or San Luis Obispo locations to eat some super tasty food and get fully loaded for a good cause!
(*Please note: This includes all in-store chowder products, along with chowder orders placed for pickup via Doordash and other apps. Online orders from Goldbelly.com will not be included.)
MOFF is a nonprofit foundation that serves the ALS community with their grant-making capabilities. Each year, they distribute much-need funds to national ALS research projects and patient care outreach programs.
Founders Larry and Martha Olson-Fernandez established the foundation in 2012 to help find a cure for ALS. Martha was diagnosed with bulbar-onset ALS in 2011. Like most ALS patients, Martha knew she was not going to survive, but she didn’t want more people to experience what she was going through. Sadly Martha passed away in December 2012 but, according to the MOFF website, “she will always be remembered in our hearts as an incredibly strong, gracious woman who loved hiking, motivating others, and teaching life lessons beyond her years.”
In November 2014, MOFF established The Martha Olson-Fernandez Foundation Fund at The ALS Association Golden West Chapter. The Golden West Chapter’s mission is to discover treatments and cures for ALS, a serious nervous system disease that weakens muscles and greatly impacts physical function. The chapter also serves, advocates for, and empowers people affected by ALS to live their lives to the fullest. Their vision is to create a world without ALS.
The money from MOFF is specifically earmarked to assist people living with ALS on the Central Coast, which includes Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Monterey, Santa Cruz, and San Benito counties.
“Thanks to the Martha Olson Fernandez Foundation, the people I work with on the Central Coast who are living with ALS have immediate access to adaptive devices that are not covered by insurance,” said Julie Scurich, Care Manager at ALS Association Golden West Chapter. “These devices enable people to maintain their independence with things such as eating, bathing, dressing, and mobility as long as possible which has a powerful impact on their quality of life.”
